Painting Name: Female Study
Artist: Carolus-Duran (1837-1917)

-
This sensational study of a young girl from behind dates to 1888. Presented in its original frame, it perfectly encapsulates Carolus Duran's love of painting the female form.

He moved to Paris in 1853 where he took classes at the Academie Suisse, and quickly made the acquaintance of a number of his artistic contemporaries, including Fantin-Latour, Courbet, Manet and Monet, with whom he would establish life-long friendships.

He is today universally regarded as one of the most influential French academic painters of the nineteenth century. His paintings are collected by major museums throughout the world, such as the Louvre in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and our Museum.
